Art & the Aesthete

I

I've not long ago seen the rather sad news that Clive seems to have closed his blog down. I have only found the beginning of a message saying he didn't have the time to dedicate to 'Art & the Aesthete' and what a wonderful time he'd had. To my surprise, the blog doesn't appear to be on the server anymore. But I want to say how grateful I am to Clive for help and support - and of course for the infectious enthusiasm for which he was well-known. The blog was often fascinating and rewarding. I'm sure many readers were aware he had been thinking about his move for a while but I wish him well on the collecting front and I'm only sorry we won't have a permanent reminder and resource online. For me, at least, it's the end of an era.

  1. Oh dear, dreadful news, though perhaps something that could have been seen coming.

I shall miss Art and the Aesthete very badly. Not only was Clive unfailingly helpful to those who commented on his posts, it was a wonderful and fascinating resource. There are many excellent printmakers whose work I have become aware of purely through Art and the Aesthete.

As you note, it is also extremely sad that the previous blog content appears to have gone down a black hole. Even lacking updates it would have been a splendid static resource. That said, if there were costs associated with keeping the site up and running, it isn't really fair to expect Mr Christie to keep paying for it after the blog had been abandoned. All in all, rather a sad day for anyone who enjoys learning about and discussing prints on the internet.

  2. A surprise and a shock really. Whatever Clive's motivations, we all owe a lot the Aesthete. I nicknamed it the Mother of all Woodblogs once. He was certainly my motivation starting the Linosaurus. His expertise will be greatly missed, and not even time to say goodbye. It's almost like a in Memoriam. A waste all that great information removed from the www. But that maybe also explaining.
Goodbye Clive, all the best and many thanks.

  3. Oh, and I managed to misspell his name in my previous comment. Fabulous.

  4. It must have been because of the shock Anthony. I still am a bit, shocked, even after an hour or two.

  5. Clive's blog has broadened my horizon enormously. I have an Eric Slater print in our living-room, for example. Before consulting "Art an the Aesthete" for the first time, I hadn't even heard of his name. So in a way I can't really believe that this tremendous blog won't be continued. In any case, Clive deserves our gratefulness for an unmatched site of information and inspiration!

  6. So sad, another of my favorite blogs ending. Why can't people just endlessly write just for me, eh?

  7. I am sorry to hear that the Art and the Aesthete blog has been closed. I for one was inspired to start my blog as a direct result of consulting Clive's. I regularly consulted it when researching "new to me" artists and his postings have on more than one occasions made me considerable profit with prints that I might have otherwise disregarded. The other print bloggers amongst us must see this as an opportunity to write new postings about all those artists that Clive had already covered comprehensively and with passion.

  8. Thank you Charles, and also to the kind words here. It's very moving. Truthfully, it was an enormous amount of work, and it had a kind of life of it's own. I loved doing it but I don't have the time for all the research and work it took. However it was an enormous amount of fun. Also, I didn't intend to remove the blog, it was more an act of compudity than a purposeful act. I shall see if I can put things back up there, so at least it can be a resource.
Of course I will be more than happy to throw in my two cents and I am always more than happy to help and consult people. My email address also remains the same (clivechristy@live.com) and I really do feel bad about the demise of the blog. However, it was through the blog, that I discovered a great deal, and "met" some wonderful people.

  9. What a sad news!
I still can't belive that all this wonderfull informative and inspiring work should be gone forever.
Clive, if it is by any means possible please put your blog up again as a standing resource - thanks.

  10. I am going to try Juergen...really...the only thing not in my favour is my incompetence at computers.

  11. Juergen you are the star of the day. Thanks to your dogged determination, the blog is back up ready to be cannibalized as people see fit. Have at it.
