Carl Thiemann: 3 versions of 'Abend'

I've just come across a third version of Carl Thiemann's celebrated colour woodcut 'Abend' of 1922. It was on a Japanese blog yama.bato.tumblr.com/ which has a pageful of striking images but quite honestly I think it must originally come from William P Carl Fine Prints. Anyway, I thought I would post all the versions that I am aware of so you can appreciate Thiemann at his most subtle, sublime and enigmatic.

  1. HI Charles, do you have a favourite?

  2. A hard one to call. I used to prefer the darker one but now there are three... I think it would be natural to want to own all three of them.

  3. Just one will do for me. Even if you'ld choose it for me. I think you're gready.

  4. I have to say just how much these image change both from the palate and the darkness. The top is definitely my favorite; brooding and atmospheric and a bit dangerous.
The middle is beautiful and captures the sense of low raking light on the sail and bow. The dark has just too much Phthalo blue in the sky for my taste although the water is an amazing color.

  6. Charles,

no doubt: they're nice all three. Then again, not as nice as "Three Little Islands"...

  7. Klaus, you are always around when I need you.

[Klaus is referring to discussion in the comments section of 'Carl Thiemann' in November. See also the post that follows on from that one,'Hiroshi Yoshida:three little islands'.Ed.]

  8. Charles,

cancel the "don't" in my last message, otherwise it doesn't make sense.

Talking about Bresslern Roth: Could I mail you some photos of that woodcut or linocut I mentioned a couple of months ago ( a thrush). Maybe you or one of your readers has got an idea who the artist is.

    thanks,
    Klaus

  9. I'll put it up when people have had time to digest Carl Moll and Sybil Andrews. Send to cgc@waitrose.com. I have another mystery printmaker it may go with..
