Modern Printmakers update

No doubt people are wondering what has happened to Modern Printmakers. The blog has been inactive for a while due to various reasons. Nevertheless, I still check the comments section and reply.

Hopefully, there will be occasional posts starting again very shortly. In the mean time here is one of Allen Seaby's wonderful kingfishers, currently on British ebay with an unnecessarily high starting bid

  1. Hurrah! To be honest it rather feels like the fine print "blogosphere" has died out recently.

  2. Well, it's never been quite the same since Clive gave up the ghost at Art and the Aesthete. And then Lily went to the wall. So, thank you for the encouragement, Anthony. I will try and do my best.

  3. Charles,

I just happened to stop by because I wanted to look something up in your archive. What a nice surprise to see that you have revived your blog! I've been missing your inspiring articles and your expertise! I hope you are well and look forward to seeing more from you. By the way: just came back from a holiday in Sussex - Slater country!

    greetings,

    Klaus

    1. No, nothing wrong, Klaus. I just missed it because I was busy with other stuff. But I was hoping you might stop by. I suppose you have seen how much Slaters are fetching now. I know you are a fan but £1,000 plus is ridiculous. As I know people are viewing again, I shall start to post. But what?

    2. Yes, Charles, I noticed that a print by Slater that I bought about 4 years ago for 220 pounds now sold for 750. I guess the exhibition at the Townwer Gallery contributed to this development. Overprized, definitely. And I am going to keep it, anyway. The same with Phillips, as you pointed out in a recent post. Nonetheless, I love his work.

    3. Well, you paid what was the going rate four years ago and that's OK. I remember the days when a friend and I were offered a Slater for £60 and we thought it was far too much even then. I mean, you have to laugh. I just wonder who these people are that pay so much. But I have to be careful because when I make comments about how much people pay, they take offence. Oh, dear.

  5. Thanks, Clive. I know exactly what you mean about the Seaby. I was tempted, too, but it has gone, so goodbye to that. The problem as you know is the dearth of decent colour prints on ebay but Rigden Read's 'Roses' rather slipped through the net some while back. The usual thing, rubbishy photo and wrong heading. It is the only example of bokashi I have ever seen by a British colour woodcut artist. Sublime. Technically, he was just so bloody good. I found out that many of his blocks and spare proofs were blown to bits by a bomb hitting their house and studio at Winchelsea when he and Kathleen were working away during the war.
